Your First Day at Renzo Gracie Prague — Step by Step
You’re Nervous. That’s Normal.
Everyone who has ever trained Jiu-Jitsu had a first day. Every black belt was once a confused white belt who didn’t know what “guard” meant. You’re not behind — you’re right on time.
Here’s exactly what happens when you show up.
Before You Come
What to Bring
- Shorts and a t-shirt — no zippers, no buttons, no pockets
- Water bottle
- Flip-flops or sandals — for walking off the mats
- Towel (optional)
- Open mind (required)
That’s it. You don’t need a Gi, you don’t need special gear. We’ll handle the rest.
What NOT to Bring
- Ego
- Jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces, watches — leave them in your bag)
- Long nails — please trim them before class. Fingers and toes.
How to Find Us
Renzo Gracie Prague Fight Academy
Mukařovského 5, Prague 13
- Metro: Luka station (Line B, yellow)
- By car: Parking available at OC Luka
- Inside: OC Luka, 3rd floor above Penny
Arrive 10-15 minutes early. This gives us time to show you around, explain the basics, and get you comfortable before class starts.
When You Walk In
- Say hi. Tell us it’s your first day. We’re expecting you (if you booked) or happy to see you (if you just showed up).
- Quick tour. We’ll show you the changing room, where to leave your stuff, where the mats are.
- Meet your training partner. We pair beginners with experienced students who know how to work with new people. They’ll guide you through everything.
- Step on the mats. Barefoot. Leave your flip-flops at the edge.
What Happens in Class
Warm-Up (10-15 minutes)
Movement drills to get your body ready. Nothing crazy — hip escapes, forward rolls, light stretching. The coach explains everything. Just follow along.
Technique (20-30 minutes)
The coach demonstrates a technique or sequence. Then you practice it with your partner, step by step. Go slow. Ask questions. Nobody expects you to get it perfect — this is about learning.
Drilling (10-15 minutes)
Repetition. Same technique, building muscle memory. Your partner works with you, not against you.
Sparring / Rolling (15-20 minutes)
Live practice. This is optional on your first day — you can watch, or you can try it at a controlled pace. If you roll, your partner will go easy. If anything feels uncomfortable, just tap (pat your partner twice) and they’ll stop immediately.
The Rules
- Tap early, tap often. If something hurts or feels too tight, tap. No shame. This is how everyone stays safe.
- Respect your partner. They’re helping you learn.
- Listen to the coach. If you’re unsure about anything, ask.
- No shoes on the mats. Always wear flip-flops off the mats.
- Good hygiene. Clean clothes, short nails, no strong cologne.
After Class
You’ll be tired. Maybe a little confused. Definitely a little excited.
Most people say the same thing after their first class: “That was nothing like I expected — and I want to come back.”
Talk to the coach. Ask questions. We’ll tell you about membership options whenever you’re ready — no pressure.
Common First-Day Worries
“What if I’m the only beginner?”
You won’t be. And even if you are, everyone remembers their first day. Nobody judges.
“What if I’m terrible?”
You will be. Everyone is. That’s the whole point — you get better by training.
“What if I gas out?”
Take a break. Drink water. Nobody expects you to keep up on day one.
“What if someone hurts me?”
Tap. Your partner stops. That’s the rule. Injuries in BJJ come from ego — not from training smart.
“What if I don’t come back?”
No problem. No commitment. But most people do come back.
